Purdue’s strong academic reputation and prestige pushes it to No. 11 among nation’s public universities, 26th overall in U.S.

Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings places university at No. 55 globally and as only Indiana university in global 100

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University remains in elite company globally and across the U.S., ranking No. 11 among the nation’s public universities and No. 26 overall in the U.S. in the 2025 Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings released Tuesday (Feb. 18).

Purdue is ranked No. 55 in the world, and no other public university in Indiana is ranked in the top 200.

Purdue’s impressive showing for its reputation and prestige in the latest Global Academic Reputation Survey reflects a major jump from consistently ranking among the top 80 worldwide  in recent history. The 2025 edition ranked 300 institutions from 38 countries and territories.

“Purdue’s academic reputation continues to grow apace,” Provost Patrick Wolfe said, “and that’s no surprise, given our focus on scholarly quality and research impact across and beyond crucial STEM fields. From faculty Dream Hires to major strategic initiatives, we continue to lay the groundwork for even greater future successes.”

Ten of the 18-member Big Ten universities are ranked among the global top 100, and Purdue is ranked higher than the University of Southern California, Ohio State, Penn State and the University of Minnesota.

The annual invitation-only survey for 2025, which received responses from over 55,000 academics, favors institutions with a familiar brand. THE revamped its methodology, emphasizing those that support scholars in their focus on research and teaching excellence.

Respondents were asked to nominate up to 15 institutions they saw as being excellent in teaching and research — with these nominations accounting for a combined 60% of institutional scores. They also were presented with a list of five institutions based on their publication history and asked to rank them in numerical order, comprising 20% of the score.

These latest measures from Times Higher Education are among several global rankings Purdue has received in the past year:
